PHOTO TOUR: Platte Valley Medical Center
SCL Health completed a build out of 17,000 square feet of existing shell space to create a 28-bed medical/surgery unit on the third floor at SCL’s Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton, Colo. With the program already in place, the goal was to understand and improve upon an existing unit’s design on the second floor to update the third floor, bringing a premier patient experience to residents in the community east of the Denver metro area.
The uniquely curved and lengthy space posed an initial challenge. Boulder Associates, which provided architecture and interior design services on the project, worked with SCL staff to come up with a solution that ensured a focus on both patient- and staff-centric aspects of the project.
For example, patient rooms are designed for ease of use by both staff and patients with improvements including the addition of a sliding door instead of a swinging door; moving the charting station to the side of the bed; and moving the visitor’s couch to leave the entry area clear for staff.
Four nurses’ stations are located on the unit. Diagonal hallways with adjacent office space, as well as comfortable waiting areas for families and visitors, cut across the floor to create quicker access across the long hallway.
For the interior design work, the focus was on the quality and quantity of artwork as well as environmentally based, prairie-themed graphic design work to reflect the facility’s location in eastern Colorado.
